Here at PraiseForWallflower.com we cover everything from aspiring local bands to larger names who deserve more attention than they are receiving. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists(myspace) is part of the latter category. Ted Leo joined up with the Pharmacists in 1999 in Washington D.C. and have since put out five full length studio albums together.
The band has catchy and insightful lyrics which no other band really compares to, in terms of what Ted Leo offers. The band has well written and interesting references to people/artistic works, questions, and scenarios.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists’ (official site) sound has punk rock’s fast-paced rhythm, the genre’s less that perfect singing style, along with influences of Folk. Of course, not every song adheres to that description; the band is also known to produce softer melodies ("The Golden Finch and The Red Oak Tree") along with less punk-driven indie rock songs ("The Lost Brigade").
Their most recent full length release is Living with the Living (2007) but have also released an EP entitled Rapid Response (2008). I have three of their five full length albums and all of them equally deserve praise. But if I had to rank them, my favorite album would be The Tyranny of Distance (2001), then Living with the Living, followed by Shake the Sheets (2004). I now hate myself for doing that.
THE SKINNY: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are a punk rock/indie rock band with great lyrics.
FAVORITE TRACK: “Parallel or Together?”
APPROPRIATE FOR: listening to in between classes
FOR FANS OF: Against Me!, The Strokes, The Bravery
