The University of Connecticut put on a concert last year that had the rapper Immortal Technique headlining. But the real treat came a couple hours prior to the rapper when I heard a great, high-energy band called The Lawless Coast.

The Lawless Coast was formed about three years ago by four UConn grads from the Willamantic area in central Connecticut. This band is young, ambitious, and their first album, The Lawless Coast (2008) is solid. The overall tone of the album is what the band dubs as "Saloon Rock", which is further described by the band's MySpace: a "blend of soulful and improvisational based rock sets." The song "Emodeo I" introduces the album and is a beautifully simple, southern rock bit, one minute long. I was impressed with the song "Pat's Song", which starts out as a quirky funk melody then descends into a dark, gritty rock jam for the last two minutes. Another  truly impressive jaun was "You Know," an outlier in the "Saloon Rock" bubble, a sleeker more progressive rock song reminiscent of The Sunshine Underground. The singer uses a lot of different tones but usually sticks with a deep, southern, expressive singing style. The Lawless Coast has some real potential: they tapped into a lot of interesting ideas during their latest album, and their easy listening style  should make them all the more tempting to new listeners. Check back here soon for more on The Lawless Coast.
