I'm upset that I hadn't heard about this group earlier. Housed on Asthmatic Kitty Records (the home of Sufjan Stevens), Fol Chen is a very mysterious, well-produced and at times dark group hailing from Highland Park, California. I use the term mysterious because I have never had such a hard time trying to find out the historical information of a band before. With that being said, I know very little of their story aside from the fact that they refer to their own sound as the "mysterious black object that the creepy family is staring at on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Presence” album." Their lyrics, which often add to the "dark" element of their music, are very clever. As for their instrumentation, they don't hesitate to use a wide arrange of tools including drums (both machined and authentic), synthesizers, strings, horns, and layers of vocals among many others. And although many of the tracks on their latest record, "Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made," may give off the "dark" vibe I've been mentioning, they somehow manage to simultaneously come across as upbeat. I think you'll have to hear for yourself to understand - which is why below I'm posting up a video of my personal favorite entitled "Cable TV," as well as a stream of another great track from the same album entitled "The Idiot."
