A little while back I did a post on electric president, the collaborative effort of Ben Cooper and Alex Cane. In that post, I briefly mentioned Ben Cooper's solo project, Radical Face. Well since then, it's been just about the only thing I've been listening to - can't seem to turn it off because it's so damn good. It's not nearly as electronic-heavy as Electric President. In fact, it's almost entirely acoustic from what I can tell. And, from the incredibly well produced blend of acoustic guitars, hand claps, percussion, piano, accordion and many other instruments, you'd find it hard to believe that the entire album was recorded in the tool shed behind Cooper's Jacksonville home (as pictured above).
His newest (and pretty much only) release is entitled "Ghost" - and is said to be a concept album about - you guessed it - ghosts. Cooper states that it was "written with the idea of houses having memories, and people leaving ghosts behind whenever they move from one place to the next. An idea that whatever we do in our homes is collected in the walls and might come out and haunt whoever moves in next." If you listen to the lyrics throughout each track, you'll discover that he managed to convey this incredibly well. Keeping that in mind, however, the album isn't as eerie or haunting as the title suggests. Those effects are definitely there - but delivered in a very beautiful manner. There are absolutely NO "filler" tracks on this record, each song is a gem. I have several favorites, but can narrow it down to a tie between "Welcome Home, Son" and "Wrapped in Piano Strings" - the latter of which you can stream below:
As for "Welcome Home, Son" I managed to dig up an amateur youtube video created by some students in Finnmark, Norway. Strange, I know. But it's a great song, and a fairly interesting video:
THE SKINNY: Radical Face is an intriguing, heartwarming, well-produced project created by an incredibly talented individual - that can be enjoyed by many
