A band that was introduced to me by PFW member Nicole Prahin, Hot Chip, is set to release a new LP in February entitled One Life Stand. It will be the first release since Made in the Dark. A handful of the tracks on that album don't really appeal to me, but the ones I do like are great. If you visit the band's website and pre-order the new album it includes a bunch of extra goodies. With the pre-order the band throws in their signatures, an advanced copy of a new track, exclusive video footage, and all the latest news about Hot Chip. Its worth checking out, trust me.

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard of The Swell Season. After staring in the little indie movie that could Once, The Swell Season has been touring constantly and even went on to win an Oscar for its song "Falling Slowly." Their new album Strict Joy came out on Oct. 27 and I'm in love. I had the great pleasure of seeing them in Philadelphia and to be honest, their live show well exceeds the quality of any of their recordings. If you have the chance, I highly recommend seeing them in concert. The track below is "The Rain" and I have not been able to stop listening to it. Enjoy.

Mack Flinn & The Whosis Kid, the brainchild of PFW's very own Chris Grzan and Joseph "Scotches" Zanko (and über time consuming project of yours truly) have been working on a new record for quite some time now. It's entitled The Whole 'Hero Journey' Thing was a Terrible Idea, and has just recently been completed and uploaded to the Mack Flinn & The Whosis Kid's Bandcamp account. Nothing like a little bit of self promotion! Seriously though, it's good music (and FREE music), so you've really got no excuse not to at least give it a shot.

    New, FREE Yeasayer

This past week for me has consisted of a lot of meds, soup, sleep and sad music. If you can't tell, I like to pity myself when I'm in a bad situation. But I'm guessing a lot of you are just as sick as I am. It seems to be going around. As a pick-me-up you should download Yeasayer's new single, "Ambling Alp", for FREE on their myspace. It's different from their usual sound and kind of reminds me of Animal Collective. So put down your tissues, stop listening to John Mayer and dance to this.

Motion CityAsk anyone and they'll tell you, I love the band Motion City Soundtrack. It may be a borderline obsession honestly. It has been over two years since their last album Even If It Kills Me was released and fans everywhere have been waiting for something new. So recently Motion City gave fans what they wanted; the first song off of their upcoming album My Dinosaur Life. It wasn't what I personally was expecting from the band, but I am more than happy with the first taste of the album. January 19th could not come soon enough.

Going along with the "nostalgic" feelings of Fall that Chris brought up last week, it motivated me to ponder on some of my own fall favorites. Sufjan Stevens undoubtedly falls near the very top of my nostalgic-fall-favorites list. I was introduced to his "Illinois" record in the fall semester of my first year of college in Manhattan. Nearly every time a Sufjan song comes on shuffle now, I picture myself wearing a hoodie and walking through the Union Square Farmer's Market on a chilly Saturday morning.

"Come on! Feel the Illinoise" off of Illinois:

Being a longtime fan of Canadian duo Tegan & Sara, I was a bit disappointed when I realized that their newest record, Sainthood, had been released, and I had almost forgotten that they even existed. After hearing mixed reviews from friends on their reactions to the new album, I took a listen for myself. I still haven't gotten to spend an extraordinary amount of time with it, but my opinion is pretty similar to what I heard from others - a bit different than their norm, but definitely not in a bad way. The first single released from the record was "Hell." My favorite, however, is the last track on the album entitled "Someday," as I'm a sucker for gang vocals and T & S's signature overlapping vocal melodies.

Folky. Gospel-y. Super vintage? Golden Shoulders offer you this mp3 as a free download. The track, "Mountain", is the opener on their album Get Reasonable which debuted in early May of this year. Here's an example of a band that obviously appeal to a certain style but don't sacrifice the quality of their product to do so. This song is dynamic, well written, and free, so enjoy.

The excitement surrounding The Almost's new record Monster Monster made me crawl back to Underoath this week. Aaron's a great singer, there's no denying it, but he's an absolutely unbelievable drummer, and that's where I prefer him. This track speaks novels on that idea.

A Song for your Fall Soundtrack

I would argue that Fall is not only the prettiest season, but the most bizarre in terms of mental placement. Every Fall, I'm looking back while looking forward. It's nostalgic, but not really.

A certain song has been on repeat on my iTunes lately to support the paradox. It's called "Shampoo" by Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson. Give it a listen, it's terrific Fall music. Sad, hopeful, confused. All at once.
