Dan Vaillancourt is a singer/songwriter out of Midland Michigan. This guy plays a guitar like its a banjo, with speed and chordal command like the pros. His vocal style is laid back and should provide your music collection with an album of tracks that are extremely revisitable. Dan mostly sticks out, to me, as a lyricist that doesn't beat around the bush; every word contributes to the final thought, leaving you wanting and needing nothing but what he says. Many of Vaillancourt's track sport a back-up band that can really rip it. See "Newspapers" on Dan's myspace for an example of that.
I found Dan on 5090.fawm.org - the before-mentioned songwriting challenge where songwriters attempt to pump out 50 new songs in a three month span.
PMtoday, newly signed members of Rise Records, are emerging from the studio with their latest release. If their most recent album is indicative of what's to come, than be on the lookout for a group that seamlessly blends emo, indie, pop, and metal (albeit, their main-stage is pop/metal) PMtoday will appeal to fans of All Time Low, Dance Gavin Dance, and The Wedding. What (obviously) sticks out about the group is the singing: 3 brothers and another dude, all belting insanely high pitched pop melodies atop crazy metal riffs. Check out "And Then The Hurricane," my favorite track.
So Long Forgotten are a pretty organic group based out of Illinois. They mix a lush amount of delayed guitars and slow tempos within a lot of excitement and aggressive singing - this juxtaposition makes for some interesting listening. Every of SLF's tracks remind me a lot of Portugal. The Man's old stuff, mainly because of the atmosphere of the music, and not so much because of the instrumentation or singing. The band is a major mover and supporter of "The Preemptive Love Coalition," a movement for general love and peace among people. SLF are outspokenly Christian, so if you need a new Christian band in your iTunes (because Flyleaf is getting boring) this could be for you.
