    The Western States Motel

    MYSPACE:
    http://www.myspace.com/thewesternstatesmotel

A voice sings softly of introspection and personal anecdotes while vividly describing an expansive and beautiful landscape of the western United States. Carl Jordan's vocals loosely remind me of Tom Petty's folkish singing style. One difference is this: Jordan keeps his voice mellow and pitch relatively low throughout is songs.

Behind these lyrics lie folk-pop guitar chords, rustic riffs, quirky keyboard tones, and simple percussion. The music has a slow, relaxed tempo. These elements are constantly circulating in the background. The songs, however, are completely ephemeral and well mixed.

According to the band's MySpace, WSM started off creating soundtracks to unmade short films set in LA, backyard nature documentaries, and various VHS camcorder retrospectives, (which may or may not be a joke). They are signed to their own label, Firebird Field Recordings (of which I can't find any sort of web presence). The Western States Motel has released a full audio CD, The Western States Motel (2007), and Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun EP (2008).

Western States has an extremely elusive web presence, so if and when we find more information on this sweet band, we'll provide more information. In the meantime, check out their MySpace and listen to what's been referred to as "Surprisingly Addictive" by more than a few listeners.
