Shutters is a band out of the greater Philadelphia area whom I had the pleasure of seeing perform in Vineland, NJ a few weeks back. They're led by singer/songwriter/artist/talented man Emmett Lindsay. Emmett, a pianist, truly hypnotized me with his retro tones, heavy with delay and full of body. Supporting him, Chloe Ghallager, cellist, lent to the fullness of the sound. Stephen Rockwell, whom might just be the friendliest guy I've ever met, held everything together with some heavily jazz influenced drumming. And finally, Daniel Manchester pieced everything together with some solid bass-ing, clearly influenced by funk, contemporary and not. The four-some played only a few tracks due to their lengthy nature, but I found the real treasure to be in the transitions between the vocal sections where the band loosened up and Lindsay laid some extremely impressive, mature rhodesesque piano embellishments.
As for the vocals, Lindsay is obviously a big believer in Bob Dylan and his unique sound. And, if you can follow along, you'll surely find a clever line or two and often a well told narrative to go with it. Shutters is a truly "artsy" band if such a thing exists: everything from their ambiance on stage, to Lindsay sketching off stage during the other band's sets, to the unbelievably intricate designs on the band's tee-shirts, to the absolutely perfect depiction of the quintessential lounge band lend to experience Shutters provide its' audience. Check out their MySpace Page , but don't be fooled; see them live and understand why they're worth a couple paragraphs here.
THE SKINNY: Shutters are a hugely jazz and funk centric group with a vocal focus on spoken word, and quick, melodic narratives.
FAVORITE TRACK: "Second Time Around "
APPROPRIATE FOR: Dancing
FOR FANS OF: MGMT, The Apples In Stereo
