For those of you who are frequent visitors of PFW, you might recall us briefly mentioning this group last spring as an honorable mention for April 09. The Ugly Club lands close to the heart here at PFW for two reasons. Reason number one: They happen to be (at least partially) from South Plainfield, N.J. Reason number two: They happen to be pumping out some very creative, original and fun music.
Founded by Ryan Egan, Taylor Mandel, Ryan Mcnulty and Michael Sue-Poi, the group prides themselves in forming under an "anything goes" mentality that has resulted in their unique sound. The founding members, accompanied by a handful of other artists (all of which are listed on their myspace page) hail from a myriad of New Jersey groups such as Socratic, The Command Radio, Beale Street Love and The Talking Machine (among others). What sets them apart, however, is the fact that they're not trying to recreate what they've individually managed to produce in the past. They come across as a group of musicians genuinely putting aside any stylistic drama and focusing on what brought them together in the first place: the music.
The Ugly Club has a handful of shows lined up across New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. Feel free to check those dates out on their myspace page. From what I can understand, they have yet to physically put out material for sale but have built up an impressive collection of tracks on their aforementioned myspace page.
