MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/trailofdead
When I first heard of this band I made a huge assumption as to what they would probably sound like. Based on their name alone I thought they would hit pretty hard. The name "And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead" suggests that there is some sort of large death toll that somehow correlates with the defining characteristics of the band. Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me and I myspaced the hell out of these guys. My initial reaction was "Wow, that's totally not what I expected." And just like that, ...Trail of Dead joined the ranks of modern music that I always find myself listening to.
...Trail of Dead consists of Conrad Keely (vocals, guitar, drums, piano), Jason Reese (drums, vocals, guitar), Kevin Allen (guitar, vocals), Aaron Ford (drums, piano, vocals), Jay Phillips (bass, vocals), and Clay Morris (piano, vocals). The thing that I admire most about these guys is their ability to grab your attention with a catchy or fast-paced intro, take you on a 4 minute tangent, and just when think the song is over.... they come right back to that intro and bring it on home. These transitions, which are sometimes awkward, are of little importance to these guys. They seem to destroy everything that the song builds by the end, leaving the listener joyfully surprised and creating an appreciation for their song structure. Their newest album, The Century of Self, was recorded and tracked live, breaking away from their studio production style of their former label.
..Trail of Dead provides heavy and anthemic compositions fueled by ridiculous tangents that you either love or hate. Some of their guitar/vocal work is reminiscent of punk and grunge and other work is more progressive and modern. Their tangents are sometimes groovy, powerful, percussion driven, or just plain noisy. Their music is truly eclectic, encompassing styles from many genres such as punk, pop, folk, progressive, indie, and even orchestral. ...Trail of Dead is all over the place and this inconsistency is not for everyone but I am definitely a fan.
THE SKINNY: Trail of Dead is an alternative art-rock group with ferocious intros, minimalist build-ups, and heroic tangents whose song structure keeps their listeners constantly refreshed.
